The 18th-century images are taken from a 'Tea Production Album' an antique that was used to promote Tea, the most important commodity historically in what was referred to as the China trade.
A piece of art created by hand in Canton (Guangzhou), China, worked with gouache, a form of opaque watercolors, on Chinese paper and silk, in the late 18th century, it is the equivalent of the modern day's marketing brochure, showing the business customer what goes on in the manufacturing process. Firmly rooted in traditional Chinese art, these albums derive from earlier Chinese woodblock prints of the late Ming (1368-1644) and early Qing (1644-1911) Dynasties.
